Rom!!

Rom.

Although Rome was undoubtedly of immense importance, I think it quite cavelier to constantly refer to it as the "light" "center" and "ruler" of the world. While Rome may be termed with some degree of accuracy the ruler and center of IT'S world, terming it the ruler of THE world is extremely inaccurate as Rome-even at it's height- really only covered the Mediterranean and most of Europe. It is worth noting that the Parthian Empire of the Iranian Plateau and the Han Dynasty of China ruled contemporaneously with the Roman Empire over land masses of similar size. As for Rome being the light, both of theses non-Rome empires had political and cultural advances at least as significant as those of the Romans (i.e. Confucian and Persian Philosophy and Literature, steel, underground canals etc.).

I feel it is interesting on how Maximus described Rome without ever being there. As Emela said earier, he called it "the light" after battling at different parts of the world (which he considered "dark"). He was fighting for Rome and stated later that he would always fight for Rome. These are bold statements for a man who has never been to this city. Many people during this time had so many unbelievable preconceptions on what Rome was. I thought something similar when I went to Prague this year. I had heard so many unbelievable things about it, however, when I got there I was very unimpressed. Perhaps Maximus would be unimpressed with the amount of poverty in Rome during that time.

I screwed up like Matt did. That was Kevin Gardner who wrote the above paragraph.
