Not sure how much this has to do with modernizing the middle ages but there's a song that I thoroughly enjoy by Rammstein (love them or hate them, sorry) They've adapted a poem by our dearest Goethe and both versions are beautifully tragic and mystical. Have a look and I'll leave the translating and comparison up to you; It's really quite manageable and very easy to find translations for (wenn du willst).
